This is a good read and the start of a great series. Magic Bites has a strong and interesting heroine. It's worth reading.

Kate is not a shifter like Mercy, but the Kate Daniels books do have a strong shapeshifter pack theme.
Both the Kate Daniels books and the Mercy Thompson books are urban fantasy books with female main characters. They both also have some romance, but not too much.

Bitten (Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong
Elena Michaels is the only female werewolf in the world. She was turned by her former lover Clay. He betrayed her and bit her in his werewolf form.
Elena did not like to live in the pack, so she left to live in human society. She left to live in Toronto with her human lover.
But then the pack alpha calls her to help fight a sudden uprising of murderous mutts. Mutts are werewolves not affiliated with a pack.
Elena Agrees to help fight the mutt uprising, but only because she felt she owes the pack alpha.
Once the mutt uprising is over, Elena will be squared with the pack. She will be free to live life as a human.
Is Otherworld good?
Bitten is an excellent book, and most of the other books in the Otherworlds series are also great. It has interesting characters and a fast-paced plot.
Bitten is a pleasure to read.
Why is Otherworld recommended?
Bitten, the first book in the Otherworld series by Kelly Armstrong does also has a strong werewolf pack them and it also has a female main character.
The books shift between other supernatural characters as the main character. Not all are werewolves, some are demons and witches.

Written in Red (The Others #1) by Anne Bishop
Meg Corbyn is a cassandra sangue, also known as a blood prophet. What this means is that she can see the future when her skin is cut.
Meg and others like her have been enslaved for their abilities, but she manages to escape.
She stumbles into Lakeside Courtyard, a business district controlled by the others, and she manages to land herself a job as the human liaison.
The others are vampires, shapeshifters, and other magical beings. Humans have no control in their small part of town.
Meg is safe from her enslaver as long as she stays inside the land controlled by the others. But is she safe from the others?
Why is The Others recommended?
The Others have werewolves and other paranormal beings. But it is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the land is controlled by the Others and humans live only at their mercy. It is a different take on the typical themes.

If you want more in this genre then its worth reading, but if you want something fresh then you should probably avoid it. It is not unique in its genre.

In this first book, she is hired to take care of a nasty rogue-vampire in New Orleans. When she is there she comes in contact with the vampire society and learns about the "sane" vampires. She also learns more about her own Cherokee heritage.

Anita Blake is a necromancer and vampire hunter.
Vampires are protected by law, but when some of them get out of hand, then you call Anita Blake, the Executioner.
Guilty Pleasures, the first book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. It starts out with someone killing innocent vampires.
Anita is approached by Jean Claude, the second strongest vampire in the city. He wants her to help figure out who is killing vampires. Anita agrees to help out after a bit of vampiric arm-twisting.
Is Anita Blake Vampire Hunter good?
This is the start of an excellent vampire series.
Well, the beginning of it is excellent. I stooped reading around book 10, it had started to go downhill a little before that.
But the first books are absolutely worth reading.
Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews
Dina Demille is by all appearances a fine young woman who runs a quiescent Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town. She also owns a small Shih Tzu named Beast.
By all counts, she should be a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem is what to serve her guests for breakfast.
But Dina does not have a regular bed and breakfast.
It's an inn for otherworldly travelers who need a place to stay. The inn is also not a regular house, its a living thinking magical construct that requires inhabitants to survive. It also has the capability ti shaped to whatever form Dina or her guest needs.
But Dina's inn is not in top shape, it's on the verge of starvation.
To solve this Dina has let a retired aristocrat responsible for millions of deaths permanently hide out in her inn. The inn need some inhabitants to survive, it does not care who. And since Inns are neutral zones, no one can stop her from housing this Aristocrat.
But this is not unproblematic. Not everyone cares about the inn's neutrality.
But that's not all.Dinaalso gets entangled with a Vampire commander and her neighbor that's a werewolf.
Is Innkeeper Chronicles good?
I love the Innkeeper Chronicles.
It has good character focus and interesting world-building.
It's absolutely worth reading.

Sookie`s life gets seriously complicated when she gets involved with the supernatural world. But Sookie is not an ordinary person herself either. She has the ability to read thoughts. Except for the thoughts of vampires. Witch is why Bill stood out to her when she met him.
True Blood is loosely based on the book series Southern Vampire Mysteries.
Is True Blood good?
True Bloodis an excellent TV show.
The story separates itself from the books after the first season, but that's OK. You should watch this show.
Why is True Blood recommended?
The main character in True Blood, Sookie, is not a shapeshifter. She is partially something else that gives her mind-reading abilities. But some of the secondary characters are shapeshifters, but vampires have a bigger part of this story.
Teen Wolf
Scott McCall's life changes forever when he is bitten by a werewolf and becomes one himself.
Some changes are positive, like strength, super-hearing, and super healing.
There are also problems and dangers that come along with being a lycanthrope. Dangers both from other werewolves and other creatures.
But as if that was not enough, there are also werewolf hunters out there.
Is Teen Wolf good?
I like it. I think it is better than similar shows like Vampires Diary. If you like other teen paranormal shows then you will most likely like this one too.
Why is Teen Wolf recommended?
Teen Wolf has a younger highschool cast and targets the same age audience. But its a good show and it has werewolves and other supernatural beings.
Legacies
Legacies is a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. It follows a new generation of magical beings where some are the children of characters from the earlier shows.
Hope Mikaelson, Josie and Lizzie Saltzman, and Landon Kirby are the main characters. Hope Mikaelson is Klaus Mikaelson's daughter and she is a witch/vampire/werewolf hybrid. Lizzie and Josie Saltzman are the twin witch daughters of Alaric Saltzman. While Landon Kirby is something else.
The main setting in Legacies is The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Its a school for vampires, witches, and werewolfs.
Is Legacies good?
Legacies is an OK show, not great, but worth watching.
If you like this kind of teen fantasy show like Teen Wolf and the Vampire Diaries then its absolutely worth watching.
I personally find Legacies better than The Vampire Diaries, but not as good as the Originals.
