Books like Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet #1)
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Wade Watts is a poor teen living with his aunt in the stacks, a trailer park with the trailers stacked atop each other. A place for the poor.
Wade only feels alive when he`s inside the OASIS, a popular online game that most of the world is obsessed with.
Even with the basic headgear and gloves, it's almost like you are inside the game. It gets even better for those with the money for specialized bodysuits.
The creator of OASIS, James Halliday, told everyone before he died that he had hidden an easter egg inside the game. And whoever finds it first will inherit his entire multi-billion-dollar fortune.
Wade is among the most dedicated hunters that label themselves as gunters. To find the egg they study the life of Halliday, especially his earlier days in the 80s. And gunters are really dedicated to their studies.
When Wade is the first to find the first clue thing takes a nasty turn when he discovers that people are willing to kill him in the real world to get it.
Is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline good?
This book is full of pop culture from the 80s, especially the cool nerdy stuff. Sadly I`m a little too young to have experienced the 80s pop culture, but I know some of it, and it is still cool.
It is all those references that make the book shine the most, Ready Player One would not be as good without it. Other VR themed books are better.
Why is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline recommended?
Ready Player One is not a science-fiction with a space theme. The book is likely also primarily aimed for people that remember the 80s.
But both Ender`s Game and Ready Player One are exciting adventures with a teenage male main character.
Even if they are not that similar, Ready Player One will probably be to your taste if you like Ender`s Game. Unless the space aspect is a requirement.
Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein
Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Service on a lark. Despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper.
In boot camp, Juan Rico will learn how to become a soldier.
Why is Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein recommended?
Both books are about military training. They are invaded/defending/attacking giant bug-like aliens that threaten their world.
Ender is more on the brainy command side of the military while Rico is more on the brutal infantry side of the battle. Don`t worry, the book is nothing like the so much criticized movie (which I actually remember liking).

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins
Panem is a nation consisting of a shining Capitol for the wealthy surrounded by twelve outlying poorer districts.
Long ago a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction. As part of the surrender terms, each of the twelve surviving districts agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called,"The Hunger Games".
"The Hunger Games" is a fight to the death on live TV. Only one survives.
Katniss Everdeen, a sixteen-year-old girl from district twelve, ends up as the female tribute from her district. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger and stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives.
Is The Hunger Games good?
This is the first book in The Hunger Games trilogy. These books are worth reading, not among the best, but still worth the time if you like young adult dystopian books.
Why is The Hunger Games recommended?
They are both set in a futuristic sci-fi universe, but Ender`s Game is set in space while The Hunger Games is not.
These books are similar in that they both consist of children/teens competing and playing in brutal "games". Warrior training is a big part of both The Hunger Games and Ender`s Game.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable and unambitious life. He is rarely traveling any farther than the local tavern.
His relaxed life comes to an abrupt end when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep. They are there to enlist him for their quest.
Their quest is to journey to the smoky mountain, the dwarven ancient stronghold. Their goal is to raid the treasure hoard that now is guarded by the terrifying dragon Smaug.
Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that this journey will bring him a magic ring. A ring he gains in a frightening encounter with a creature known as Gollum.
Is The Hobbit, or There and Back Again good?
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, is a really good book. It might be mainly targeted for children, but it is also good for adults... Or at least adults like me.
Why is The Hobbit, or There and Back Again recommended?
The Hobbit is not science-fiction, and its primary audience is probably even younger than for Ender`s Game.
None of us can set our fingers on exactly why it belongs on the list. It does not have many direct similarities. But we feel that the audience of both books will most likely contain many of the same people.

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse #1)
Bob Johansson has just sold his software company and now he is looking forward to a life of leisure as a rich man.
Sadly Bob dies in an accident right after reaching his dreams.
But before he died, Bob paid for a service to freeze his brain. It will be kept frozen until we have the technology to put it into a new body.
However, when he wakes up a century later, he discovers that dead people have been declared to be without rights. Bob is now the property of the state.
As if that wasn't enough, he has been uploaded into a computer. His new task is to be the controlling AI of an interstellar von Neumann probe. His goal is to search for new habitable planets humanity can colonize.
If he declines, he'll be switched off.
If he accepts, he becomes the main target of competing states with similar projects and goals.
Is Bobiverse good?
The Bobiverse series is the best sci-fi book series I have read in a long while.
It's full of references to interesting science and popular culture.
It has a good story with cool humor. It's also very interesting and funny how the different bobs interact with each other.
Great books.
Why is Bobiverse recommended?
Bobiverse is more aimed at an older audience. The main characters are also not children, and the main advisory is not an alien race, at least not in the beginning.
Bobiverse is not that similar to Ender`s Game, but it is good and you might like it if you like Endre`s Game.
The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Sequence #1) by Jonathan Stroud
Britain is ruled by powerful magicians.
Nathaniel, a young boy, is sold to the government by his birth parents. He is sent to live as an apprentice to Arthur Underwood. A cold, condescending, and cruel middle-ranking magician.
After being publicly humiliated by the ruthless magician Simon Lovelace, Nathaniel swears revenge. He plans to do this by stealing the powerful Amulet of Samarkand. The amulet belongs to his master Underwood, but Nathaniel does not mind. Underwood did nothing to defend him from Lovelace's humiliation.
Nathaniel hones his magic skills to be able to summon the 5,000-year-old djinni Bartimaeus.
He plans to use the 5,000-year-old Bartimaeus to take revenge on Lovelace.
Nathaniel is plunged into a situation more dangerous and deadly than anything he could ever imagine.
Is Bartimaeus Sequence good?
This is a well-paced story with a good plot.
You should read this series, it is really good.
The story itself is well-paced and complex enough to keep the reader guessing.
Why is Bartimaeus Sequence recommended?
Ender and Bartimaeus are both highly intelligent and both have a sharp tongue. They are also both young boys.
The main difference is the Bartimaeus Sequence is a fantasy series, has no threats from an invading army, and children are not trained to become warriors.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling
Harry lives a miserable life with the Dursleys. His horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley.
Harry's room is a tiny cupboard under the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in ten years.
But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by an owl, a letter with an invitation to Hogwart, an infamous school for witches and wizards.
So begins Harry's new life in a boarding school for wizards and witches.
Is Harry Potter good?
This is the first book of a finished seven-book series about Harry Potter, the boy who lived.
To be honest, I am not a fan of the two first books in this series, but the rest of them are absolutely fantastic.
Highly recommended.
Why is Harry Potter recommended?
Harry Potter is not science-fiction, it is fantasy.
But if you like Ender`s Game and want a fantasy series that has similarities then Harry Potter is a good choice.
They both have you main characters that are special and the fate of many rests on them.
Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth
The dystopian society in Divergent is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue. Candor the honest, Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Amity the peaceful, and Erudite the intelligent.
On an appointed day all sixteen-year-old teens must select the faction they want to devote the rest of their lives too. There are no takebacks as soon as the choice is done.
Beatrice has to decide between staying with her family in Amity or choosing to be who she really is. She can't have both, and the choice she makes ends up surprises everyone, including herself.
Beatrice takes the new name Tris when she joins her new faction.
She discovers that she also has a secret, one she has to keep hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death.
Is Divergent good?
Many people like this Divergent, but I`m not a big fan. It was ok, but I did not read the rest of the books in the series.
Divergent is yet another YA dystopian book series. If this is your thing, then Divergent is probably worth reading.
Why is Divergent recommended?
Ender`s Game is in space, while Divergent is on the surface of a post-apocalyptic world.
Fighting and marshal-arts training are a big part of both Divergent and Ender`s Game. Children or teens are also the main characters on both.
Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle #1) by Patrick Rothfuss
Kingkiller Chronicle is a first-person story of a young man who grows to be the most notorious magician his world has ever seen.
From his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, and to his years spent as an orphan suer rat in a crime-ridden city. Then to his daring yet successful gamble to enter a legendary school of magic. And then how he learns magic and grows to become the notorious magician he once will become.
Is Kingkiller Chronicle good?
This book starts out a little slow, but it becomes one of the better fantasy books there is.
Kingkiller Chronicle is a must-read for any fantasy book lover.
Sadly it looks like Rothfuss is starting to compete with George RR Martin on who is the slowest.
Why is Kingkiller Chronicle recommended?
Both books are about gifted young boys that join a special school and excels against all odds. But one is medieval fantasy while the other is futuristic science fiction.
The main audience of Kingkiller Chronicles is also older.
Dune (Dune #1) by Frank Herbert
Paul Atreides is heir to a noble family recently tasked with ruling Arrakis, an inhospitable desert planet. A planet that produces a very valuable resource.
The "spice" melange, a life-extending drug that also enhances consciousness.

As the journey evolves Paul becomes the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. A man that wants to avenge the traitorous plot against his family. But also a man that wants to bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.
Is Dune good?
Dune is a science-fiction classic, and for good reason.
It has it all. Greate adventures with interesting characters and excellent world-building wit a living world. The world of Dune has a complex ecology and a living culture with deep and intriguing politics.
Dune should be on the must-read list of every science-fiction fan!

Getting through the mace is the only way out of the glade, but no one has ever done it alive.
They find themselves in trouble after uncovering a diabolical plot from a powerful organization.
Is The Maze Runner good?

Movies like Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet #1)
Independence Day
Alien UFOs have come to earth and placed themselves above our biggest cities.
We tried to communicate with them in hopes that they are friendly, but we were not so lucky. They fired a beam of destruction down on the cities and sent out a swarm of smaller fighter ships.
Our survival hangs on a small group of determined people that might be able to find the invader's weakness.
Is Independence Day good?
I remember I watched this multiple times as a kid. I truly loved it. I think I need to re-watch it. Se if the movie holds up to the nostalgia.
Why is Independence Day recommended?
The main characters in Independence Day are adults and earth technology is not futuristic. The main similarity is the invasion of an alien species aspect.
Independence Day is not that similar. Only check it out if you already have tried most other suggestions on this list, or if you like the description.

Avatar
We are mining rare minerals in space, and we have found a truly rear mineral on a planet far away.
The only drawback is that this planet is occupied by a native species. But as history has shown, that`s not going to stop us.
We first try a peaceful approach by using Avatars that look like the inhabitants. Sadly, we fail to convince them to move peacefully, and force is next to be used.
Luckily for the natives, one of our Avatar riders has switched sides, he is helping them out in their fight for survival.
How is this going to end, are we going to get our minerals, or are they keeping their planet for themself.
Is Avatar good?
Avatar is a truly amazing movie.
I remember watching it in 3D when it came out, and I was awestruck.
It was so visually stunning, and it has a decent story too. A twist on an old classic.
Why is Avatar recommended?
Avatar is not that similar to Ender`s Game. It does have aliens, space travel, and other worlds.
If you want a movie with these themes and that has a big crossover with the Ender`s Game target audience, then Avatar is a good choice.

It is the movie adaptation of the book, need I say more... I Actually liked this adaptation.
