Magical and Supernatural Schools and Academies

Magical School Book Recommendations

Magic, superpowers, alchemy, and other supernatural powers do not always come naturally to the people and creatures that have them. Sometimes they have to go to schools to learn it. And the stories we are told from how they learn their powers are often interesting and funny.

This article is for those of you that love Magical School and Academy stories and want more of them. We have created a large list of excellent suggestions for more magical school books to try out.

Most of our suggestions are books with stories about typical magical schools where the students learn classical magic. They have classes about transmutations, conjurations, divination, enchantment, illusion, and even some necromancy. Other classes might be about potions, alchemy, and so on.

But some of the magical school books we suggest are also from slightly different areas, but they are all in the fantasy genre with supernatural elements.

Some might be schools for magical beasts, like vampires. A school where they can go to learn about their powers and how to fit into their society. And other recommendations might be books about schools for people with superpowers.

Most of our magical school book recommendations are series where most of the books in the series centers around school life, but a few might only have a book or two in the series with this theme.

Wu Ying is given the opportunity to join the Verdant Green Waters Sect. Joining means that he will give up his common life and start the bloody path of becoming an immortal cultivator.

Is A Thousand Li good?

A Thousand Li is an excellent cultivation book, or wuxia/xianxia if you like.

Wu Ying is a likable character, and his cultivation journey is interesting.

Why is A Thousand Li included?

A Thousand Li is not your typical Magical School book. It is a wuxia/xianxia cultivation book. But the main character is in a kind of school setting.

It is not the best recommendation if you want a traditional magical school story. This is added as a suggestion that might take you in a new direction.

Is Codex Alera good?

Furies of Calderon is the first book of Codex Alera, a finished six-book series.

This is an excellent series, and I absolutely recommend people loving fantasy books to read it.

Why is Codex Alera included?

Some of the books in the Codex Alera series are set in a magical school. But that is far from the main theme or setting of the series.

Sonea is a young slum rat that suddenly discovers that she has magical potential. She discovered it when she throws a stone through a magical barrier and accidentally hits a magician shielded behind it. Only magic could get through that shield.

The magicians want her to join their guild, but Sonea has an understandable but unnecessary distrust of the magicians. Soo she ends up running away from them.

The magicians must find her before her uncontrolled and untrained powers kill her and possibly destroys the city.

This is not an easy task. Sonea knows the slums and its hidden sewers like only a slum child can.

The guild desperately tries to hunt her down to attempt to convince her to join them and start in their school.

Is The Black Magician good?

I liked this book quite well, but I read it back in my earlier days when I was new to fantasy books.

The story in The Magicians' Guild is kind of unoriginal and follows standard fantasy structure. But if you are kind of new to fantasy books or like me, liking these kinds of stories, then it should be a good read.

Is Super Powereds good?

Super Powereds is one of the better series I have read in a while. Great long books. They are akin to the magical school type of books, but with college age students instead of the commonly younger age group. There are five main characters, and the author has actually managed to distribute the focus fairly among them.

Is Kingkiller Chronicle good?

This book starts out a little slow, but it becomes one of the better fantasy books there is.

Sadly it looks like Rothfuss is starting to compete with George RR Martin on who is the slowest.

Is The Wizard of Earthsea good?

A Wizard of Earthsea is the first book in the The Earthsea Cycle. This series can probably be titled as a classic fantasy series. I remember that I really liked it back when I read it, but that is starting to be some years ago. I don't think it can compete with some of the newer epic fantasy series.

Is Schooled in Magic good?

I like these books, but i kind of like magic school books for some reason. It`s interesting to see "modern" technology being introduced to a medieval like magic world, and the magic system is interesting and detailed. The main character is also enjoyable.

Two neighboring countries are divided by a wall, Ancelstierre to the south, and The Old Kingdom to the north.

Ancelstierre has a technology level and society similar to that of early-20th century England. The Old Kingdom has a more medieval technological level, but they do have both Free Magic and Charter Magic. This last tidbit is officially denied by the government of Ancelstierre and disbelieved by most of its inhabitants.

Sabriel is in her last year at Wyverley College, a private school in Ancelstierre that lies close to the wall to The Old Kingdom.

When an undead creature enters their dormitory Sabriel notices it is attempting to communicate. It is a messenger from her father, the Abhorsen, who is now past the Seventh Gate of Death.

The message tells Sabriel that she is to take on the role of Abhorsen and defeat Kerrigor, a powerful necromancer who is attempting to make his way back into Life.

The undead messenger gives Sabriel the Abhorsen's bandolier of bells, the Abhorsen's sword, and a map of The Old Kingdom.

Sabriel leaves Wyverley College and travels into the mystical land of the Old Kingdom.

Is Abhorsen good?

Sabriel is a really great book and the rest of the Abhorsen books are just as good. They are YA books, but they are still worth reading for adults.
